Australian Idol champ Stan Walker is in the Day speaking out about his plans to get genetically tested for ‘an aggressive and deadly hereditary stomach cancer.'

"You can get your stomach removed. I want to do that - then I'd be skinny," jokes Stan.

"You'd still have a big bum though," points out his mum April.

Stan tells New Idea he has a definite idea about the qualities he'd like to find in his dream girl. "I want someone who can sing, is funny, can eat and someone who loves family, God and me."

That's confusing?? Why is he getting checked out for cancer?

the person who 'wrote' the article got her sources (as quoted) from New Idea and Day, which I assume she meant Woman's Day.

anybody got copies of those mags to check?

actually, seeing this was found on a NZ website, she might have been quoting off NZ editions of the mags, so...

His family have lost a lot of members to cancer - that is why is the Sony Ambassador (or at least one of the reasons) he has a particular interest.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is having genetic screening for cancer. A lot of people with a family history do these days. If the quote is true, sounds sensible to me. DOES NOT mean he has it, just means he wants to know his risk.

ok well he better nto have it, and his risk better be extremely low :)

omgg , my mum was talking about this last night .. so she is getting me the mag from work so i can read ..

my goodness... at first I've nearly fainted...

It's good though that he gets checked, prevention is the best cure. My family is tested every year for similar reasons... you get used it after a while... and makes you feel like you are in control of the disease.
Stan is the perfect ambassador for the cause, he acts and speaks responsibly about it adding a hint of irony... you need it in those circumstances... he is mature beyond his years

you can tell from the light-hearted way Stan and mum was joking about it, but (and this is not surprising at all) there are ppl now who actually seriously believe Stan has cancer.

I know - I just responded to a couple of tweets on the topic. Sheeeeeeesh.

Women have mammograms to detect breast cancer, pap smears to detect cervical changes to detect early - I don't see Stan's actions, if and when they are verified, as any different.

womans day that came out on the 14th has this article and the title is enough to make your heart beat faster......i read it on the net not the whole article am buying the magazine tomorrow but it is just a check because he has this gene that has killed 25 of his family members and his mum has the gene too.....deb

anyway, when anyone has the mag please drop in to post the whole article 'cause that gossip ref doesn't go well with our Stanilicious interest ( I know is a word used by the mag......but still...) and it regards something really personal as medical family history, so we better get this issue straight and clear any uncertainty .... some ppl got upset with this news.... would be great to have the full story in our hand before freaking out further

In the meantime I'll say: the important thing is that Stan has been tested regularly to limit the danger.

yes it is good I think I told you one big Maori family a few years back was used for a new break through on how genetically one family can get this disease in each generation and sometimes each generation it gets worse this Maori family it was ovarian cancer but because of them and a few other families around the world they were able to see the DNA facts on it..
even though this is a serious issue I like it that April said he still would have a 'big bum' poor Stan
