    Life Lessons: Stan Walker

Post by _KENNY on Thu Sep 02, 2010 3:57 pm

Life lessons from the Australian Idol winner.

It's been a good journey. And the second album's not really a pressure - it's a challenge for me, and I love challenges. This album shows more about me as an artist, because people expect Idol, but that's just covers and you've got to become your own artist. You've got to move on. The first album took two days. But this one was six, seven, eight months, so I definitely got to experience making an album.

All the songs today are about having sex and taking your clothes off. I want to tell real stories in my songs and give a message to people to think about - and so they can relate it to their life.

The way I talk about love is not the way everybody talks about love. For some it's lust. Or seduction. Or being seduced. You know, 'come on, take me ...' What sort of an example is that? Girls letting themselves be dogs and letting males be their owners? I'm trying to bring love back to its real meaning. And my favourite song on the album is Love Graffiti, it's a real pop song. I love the melody, I love the tune, I love the way the verse leads to the chorus. I love it.

You can't be dumb and naive in this business. You've got to be really on to it in case somebody takes your career for a joy ride. And my mum rings me up every day, so I'm always somehow with them [his family], and she helps me out a lot with stuff.

It's all about staying grounded. That's the most important thing. You've got to be strong, stand out and be different. I want to surprise people, that's why I don't want to have my hair short because then I'd just look like every other black R&B artist. I'd just rather have it natural like this, although I have to put product in it so it doesn't afro-up fully.

    * Stan Walker's second album, From the Inside Out, is out now.

He certainly tells it like it is and doesn't mince words in this article! I'm glad that he wants to bring a different message to music and relate it to real people's lives. It's also music that you can quite safely let your children listen to and not worry about what sort of message they're getting! Unlike some of the latest albums that come with parental advisory warnings, Stan's is clean so doesn't need any of that!
