    Australia Day celebrations in the nation's capital.

    Tuesday, 18 January 2011 13:51

    The Australia Day celebrations in the nation's capital will start with an action-packed race day at Thoroughbred Park and finish with a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Burley Griffin, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope announced today.

    A range of events will be held across the ACT including Canberra's biggest, free community sausage sizzle, a sailing regatta and concerts featuring some of Canberra's and Australia's best acts.

    Volunteers from the SES will be collecting donations for the Queensland Premier's Flood Relief Appeal during the festivities.

    In launching the program, Mr Stanhope said Australia Day 2011 promises to be one of the biggest yet.

    "From a bush picnic and children's festival, to a concert featuring the Wiggles and Jessica Mauboy, the opportunities to get out and celebrate Australia Day this year are endless," Mr Stanhope said.

    The celebrations begin on 21 January with the Australia Day Race Day at Thoroughbred Park and the Athletics ACT Summer Series track and field meet at the AIS.

    The Australia Day Eve celebrations on the lawns of Parliament House will feature the announcement of the Australian of the Year by the Prime Minister and entertainment by some of the country's best musical talent, including the Wiggles, Jessica Mauboy, Littler Red, Ross Wilson, The McClymonts, Stan Walker, Thirsty Merc and Altiyan Childs.

    On Australia Day itself, the action gets underway in Commonwealth Park with the Big Aussie Day Breakfast, flag-raising and citizenship ceremonies, and a stunning parachute drop by the Red Berets.

    Other Australia Day highlights include:

    A bush picnic at Tidbinbilla featuring bush music, dance and food;
    The Children's Festival and Aussie Day Jam in Commonwealth Park;
    The Chief Minister's Sailing Regatta; and
    • A spectacular fireworks finale over Lake Burley Griffin.

    woow hoo! Stan in Canberra for Aus Day! at parliament house?
    It doesn't get more official than this!

    I actually walked on that lawn, it's just perfect to held an event as such... and what a view!
    First/Last time I was there I saw a group of great brave young Australian fasting in the name of a noble cause .... can't remember what that was haha... most probably there will be some demos during the celebrations... i bet Stan would approach them to listen to what they have to say and probably give 'em support... he is always for the ppl!

    + FULL LIST: Where to celebrate in the national capital

    Police are preparing to crack down on under-age drinkers at the free Australia Day Live concert tomorrow night.

    A temporary fence will be erected around lawns of Parliament House where the concert will be held and security have been told to keep a close eye on drunken teens trying to enter the site.

    At last year’s concert, 10 juveniles affected by alcohol were required to be taken into protective custody.

    The all-ages concert will be held on the lawns of Parliament House, at Federation Mall, from 6pm to 10pm.

    The celebrations begin with the announcement of the Australian of the Year. Indigenous lawyer and academic Larissa Behrendt, of NSW, is the favourite to be named Australian of the Year, beating, among others, retiring Australian National University vice-chancellor Ian Chubb, and will take over from mental health advocate Professor Patrick McGorry.

    The ACT's nominees for the other categories - women's advocate Marie Coleman as Senior Australian, youth support volunteer David Bresnik as Young Australian and Salvation Army worker Alan Jessop as Local Hero - face tough challenges.

    The post-presentation concert will be hosted by the ABC's Myf Warhurst from 7.15pm and include The Wiggles, Ross Wilson, The McClymonts, Thirsty Merc, Jessica Mauboy, Stan Walker, Justice Crew, Altiyan Childs and GANGgajang.

    The next morning there will be the announcement of the latest additions to the Order of Australia.

    Canberra's Australia Day public festivities, including a citizenship ceremony expected to be presided over by Prime Minister Julia Gillard, will be focused on Commonwealth Park.

    Muslim community leader Ikebal Patel is the ACT's Australia Day ambassador. He came to Australia in 1992 and has been involved in Civil Liberties Australia, the Australian Partnership of Religious Organisations, the White Ribbon Foundation for the elimination of violence against women, and the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils.

    Sydney's annual keynote address will be delivered by a non-Australian for the first time. Former British talk-show host Michael Parkinson - who was made an honorary Australian - will reveal his views as an outsider on the transformation of Australia and its people today.
