Half the Sky Foundation is pleased to announce that its fourth annual Gala for the Children on 21 May will feature a performance by 20-year-old singing sensation Stan Walker, who recorded his first album after winning Australian Idol in 2009 and his second album “From the Inside Out” last year. His most recent release is his single “Loud.”
In addition to his top-of-the-charts recording career, Walker, who comes from a large Maori family, has also launched an acting career. In the upcoming New Zealand film A Gift to Zion, Walker plays a young, ambitious Maori boy who wants to become an artist.

Because Walker talks openly about the “broken” childhood he had to overcome, he has become an effective motivational speaker and role model. Last year, Walker traveled to Haiti for Compassion Australia where he was “humbled” by those who survived the earthquake, especially the children, whose capacity for reaching out to others survived their incredible losses.

Greeting our new friend from New Zealand will be our wonderfully generous and diverse community of Hong Kong friends, who have made our Gala possible. We are thankful for the major support of leading firms including Asia Alternatives Management LLC, Coles Group Asia, Target, Kmart, Wesfarmers, Goldman Sachs, Jack Morton Worldwide, J.P. Morgan, McDonald’s Macau, HAVI Logistics, Li and Fung Group, IDS Group, Talent 2, Toll Global Forwarding, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Coca-Cola Amatil and East Vision Holdings Limited.

Half the Sky’s CEO and Founder Jenny Bowen, said:

I know this year’s Gala will be an incredible night for the children. I am especially looking forward to Stan Walker’s performance because he is not only a wonderfully passionate artist but also an advocate for children. I know he wants what Half the Sky works so hard to provide in China—loving care for every child born into this world.

Carma Elliot, who recently joined Half the Sky as Executive Director, China after a 23-year-career as a British diplomat, will also be in attendance. Elliot said:

I am delighted to attend my first Gala and to have the opportunity to celebrate our work with, and thank, our very supportive community in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Gala, which is a celebration of China’s National Children’s Day as well as a fundraising event for Half the Sky, will be held at the Harbour Grand Ballroom and will include drinks and dinner, a live auction hosted by Christie’s, silent auctions, and just plain fun.

All proceeds from the gala will benefit Half the Sky Foundation, a global NGO that establishes and operates programs that provide emotional and educational support for orphaned children living in government-run welfare institutions across China. Half the Sky’s offices are in Hong Kong, Beijing, Berkeley, London, Melbourne and Vancouver.
